A two-day training on Best Management Practices (BMP) for Oil Palm was held at Okomu Oil Company, Edo State, from October 23rd to 24th, 2025. The training was organized by Okomu Oil Company to educate TA Commodity Extension Officers on effective, sustainable, and modern methods for managing oil palm plantations, aiming to enhance productivity and profitability.
Objectives of the Training
The training aimed to:
1. Educate oil palm farmers on practices that minimize environmental impact.
2. Strengthen knowledge of improved oil palm management techniques.
3. Enhance understanding of soil preparation, nursery management, and field maintenance.
4. Promote sustainable practices that improve yield while protecting the environment.
5. Equip Extension Officers with practical field skills for effective plantation management.
Key Lessons Learned
Practical understanding of field auditing procedures.
Proper pruning techniques and identification of right-handed and left-handed palms.
Knowledge of frond production rate, canopy management, and ablation practices.
Improved appreciation of sustainable management practices for higher yield and environmental conservation.
Conclusion
The training was highly educational and practical. It significantly enhanced my understanding of modern oil palm management techniques and equipped me with valuable field skills that will improve my effectiveness as an Extension Officer.
